A (very) brief history of Largs

  • Photo copyright Jack Boyle (Jackatlargs).
Evidence shows humans have been in Largs since the Neolithic period. The area has witnessed many changes over the years. Here are just a few important dates:

2000-3000 BC - Neolithic tomb created
October 1263 - The Battle of Largs
1636 - Skelmorlie Aisle built
1820 - Roman Baths discovered
1834 - Largs Pier constructed
1885 - Railway connected from Fairlie
1912 - Pencil Monument built
1935 - Nardini's Cafe built
1953 - Scottish golfer Sam Torrance (OBE) born in Largs
1980's - Viking Festival began to commemorate Battle of Largs
1995 - Voted Scotland's Top Tourist Town

Now it's your turn.

Above are just a few important dates - there's far more to the heritage of Largs. There's a lot of interest in local history, and lots and lots of local knowledge. And here's your chance to tell everyone about it. If you have an interest in the history of Largs - either in general or in specific points - then you can post it here. There must be many, many pictures of the village from throughout the 20th century - why not post them here, and ask other people what they remember?

NOT VERY MANY COMMENTS ON LARGS HISTORY BY THE PUBLIC,I GUESS THE PAST GETS FORGOTTEN QUICKLY OR PEOPLE LIKE ME IN THERE OLD AGE ARE DYING OF.

Although I live in Melbourne, I have a huge interest in Largs and surrounding areas, because this is where my 5th g.grandfather, William Finnie, apparently came from (Constablewood, to be exact) before moving to Kilmarnock sometime prior to his marriage to Ann Boyd in Ardrossan, in 1745.  William's first wife was Mary Wilson, the daughter of James Wilson (I believe a JP in Largs), and she bore him three children before dying sometime between 1742 (when their last child, Janet, was born) and 1745.  The couple were married in 1736 in Stevenston.

Researching my family has given me an opportunity to "explore" these towns...an absolute delight, given that it's such a beautiful region.  Scratching my head here, trying to work out how my 4th g.grandfather, John Finnie, could bear to leave all this behind to move to Sussex!!  Kind regards, Lynne.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
