Council gives go-ahead for Hunterston offshore turbine tests near Largs
20 February, 2012The view from Largs is set to change, with the news that North Ayrshire Council's planning committee has given the go-ahead for an offshore wind turbine test facility at Hunterston.
The £10 million facility will test models and prototypes of offshore turbines before they are deployed in the new generation of windfarms around the Scottish and UK coast.
The committee was told that the development represents an opportunity to tap into the massive investment pouring into this industry, totalling between £100 billion and £120 billion over the next few years.
The new facility will operate for five years and has the potential to generate a range of economic and employment opportunities for local businesses. The committee also heard that major turbine manufacturers have indicated that this is a necessary precursor to turbine manufacturing plants.
The new development at Hunterston will establish North Ayrshire and the West of Scotland as a centre of expertise for the offshore generating industry.
