Largs Academy pupils’ £5,000 challenge to volunteer abroad
Three Largs Academy pupils have teamed up to raise £5,000 so they can volunteer abroad.
S6 students, Robyn Stewart, Haley McCracken and Rebecca Riddell hope to help children overseas via the Project Trust.
Robyn hopes to teach English at a school in Thailand; Haley plans to tutor kids in Sri Lanka; whilst Rebecca wants to do social work in South Africa.
But the girls, who are all 17, need to raise £5,000 themselves through sponsorships, events and donations, in order to go.
When s1largs caught up with Robyn, she was excited about the project.
She said: “I’m looking forward to being away and being in charge of a class.
“I know people who have done it before and said it’s really good.
“They have a choir at the place I’m going so I’d like to join that.
“I’m also looking forward to having independence and not being told what to do!”
So far, the trio have held a ceilidh in their quest to reach their fundraising target.
The event, at Inverclyde Sport Centre on Saturday, February 4, raised over £1,600.
Their next project will be organising Largs Academy’s got Talent.
Robyn, who hopes to do geography at university after her Thai adventure, also has plans for a sponsored run.
She said: “Saturday’s ceilidh went really, really well, but we’ve still got a long way to go.
“We also have to write to charities to ask for trust funds.
“There’s a book of trusts and you pick the ones that are relevant to what you’re doing.”
Head teacher of Largs Academy, Mr Arthur Jones, told s1largs that he was delighted for his students.
He said: “The Project Trust has been done in the school for a number of years – we usually get someone in to talk to the sixth years about it and we’ve had a number of students going in the past.
“There are six students this year going to different places all over the world.
“It’s a bit of fun and they get to be independent.
“Once they decide they’re taking part though, it’s all in their hands – they’ve got to have the energy and the enthusiasm to raise the £5,000 towards it.
“I’m delighted for them and I want them to get the best of this experience.”
The Project Trust offers placements in Africa, Asia and America and gives young people the chance to learn about a wider community than that in which the previously lived.
