Largs residents urged to donate furniture in New Year scheme

by Rebecca Garrett

Largs residents are being urged to start the New Year on a green note and reuse their unwanted goods.

The appeal comes after North Ayrshire Council staff donated loads of furniture to charity in the space of one week.

The council joined forces with Cunninghame Furniture Recycling Company (CFRC) in November 2011 for the first ever North Ayrshire Furniture Reuse Week.

Now, members of the public are being encouraged to recycle old furniture, instead of throwing them out with the household waste.

Councillor Tom Barr, spokesperson for the environment, said: “Being able to reuse these goods is a major way of avoiding waste going to landfill sites, reducing North Ayrshire’s carbon footprint and helping to save the environment.

“Not only does CFRC’s service make it easy to clear your home of unwanted furniture and goods, it also gives those who may struggle to afford furniture the chance to buy these goods at an affordable price.

“I would certainly encourage local residents to make use of their service.”

Hugh McGhee, Head of Cunninghame Furniture Recycling Company, said: “At CFRC we act as intermediaries – offering free and convenient collection services to donors so that we can offer a selection of good quality, affordable furniture and white goods for those looking to buy.

“So that others can make best use of your donation we’re looking for quality reusable furniture.

“From couches, beds and wardrobes, to chairs, tables and white goods – if it is in good condition it can be reused to help others.”

CFRC will accept:

  • Sofas and soft furnishing WITH fire labels
  • Good quality chairs, tables and white goods
  • Beds and bedroom furniture

Please call 01294 475650 to find out if your donation is likely to be accepted.

Some items are unlikely to be accepted because of health and safety and/or hygiene issues, including:

  • Sofas and soft furnishings with no fire labels
  • Furniture with significant tears and rips
  • Furniture which is broken and irreparable

All of the furniture donated to CFRC is displayed at their premises at Unit 3, 26 Campbell Street, Kilmarnock, KA1 4HL.

You can call CFRC on 01294 475650 to arrange a collection date.
