22/1/2010Sparks fly about Largs Traffic Management plan
It seems traffic issues are never far from the front page in Largs. At the moment there's the debate about road contractor Amey throwing a late spanner in the works of the long-awaited Largs Traffic Management plan, as reported by the Largs & Millport Weekly News.
The scheme, meant to improve the traffic flow in Largs which was agreed after years of frustrating consultation, was expected to start soon but has been halted by NAC after Amey submitted late objections.
Add to that the fact that potholes and damaged roads could be a big problem in the coming months after the recent big freeze blew a big hole in budgets both for emergency winter maintenance and road repairs.
Despite the efforts of gritting and maintenance teams during the recent bad weather, a report in the Herald revealed that councils across Scotland are facing an overspend of nearly double on winter maintenance budgets for gritting and snow clearance, with a national bill over nearly £100 million. These figures come on top of a previously-reported £1.8 billion backlog for repairs on roads across the country.
And speaking of maintenance, we will have roadworks in place during off peak hours through Largs on Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 January. There will be temporary traffic control on the A78 southbound on Irvine Road at Scott Street junction, Largs between 9.30am-3.30pm.
Have the roads in your area been badly affected by the freeze? What should the priorities be - and where does the work need to start?
